Cregis Custody FZE Secures Dubai VARA In-Principle Approval to provide Digital Asset Custody Services in the UAE

Cregis Custody FZE has received In-Principle Approval (IPA) from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) as part of its application for a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license.

This marks an important step toward developing Cregis Custody FZE’s planned regulated digital asset custody services in the UAE. Following the IPA, Cregis Custody FZE will continue working with VARA to complete the remaining regulatory requirements toward full licensing approval. At this stage, Cregis Custody FZE is not yet authorised to commence regulated Virtual Asset activities or provide Virtual Asset Custody Services. Such regulated services will only commence upon the granting of the relevant VASP licence by VARA.

Under the Cregis brand, Cregis Custody FZE focuses on custody-related services, while Cregis, as a separate entity, continues to provide digital asset infrastructure supporting collections, payouts, and fund operations for businesses globally.

Beyond Cold Storage: What the Coldcard Incident Reveals About Wallet Security

The Coldcard incident highlighted a critical lesson in wallet security: offline storage alone cannot protect assets if a weakness is embedded at the point of key generation. A flaw in certain firmware versions reduced the randomness used to create wallet seeds, potentially shrinking the search space enough for attackers to reconstruct candidate seeds, derive private keys and identify matching addresses on-chain. The case shows that wallet security must be evaluated across the entire lifecycle, from randomness and key generation to firmware, backups, recovery and migration, rather than by storage method alone.

For the broader industry, the incident also underscores the long-term risk of vulnerabilities already embedded in deployed wallets. Firmware updates can fix future key generation, but cannot repair previously created seeds, making version identification, user notification and asset migration essential parts of incident response. The incident underscores the need for end-to-end verification, continuous maintenance and a clear emergency migration strategy to prevent a single technical flaw from becoming years of legacy risk.
